What are relationships?

Relationships in Simply Stakeholders refers to the connections that stakeholders have with other record types (other stakeholders, interactions, properties).

Why should I use relationships?

You should use relationships to understand not just who is involved, but how they're connected and why those connections matter. In this way, you gain a deeper view of the networks that influence your projects.

Being able to identify who is involved in your interactions and how they're engaging:

  • Ensures accountability.

  • Provides a clear record of who was informed or involved in decisions.

  • Supports effective relationship and engagement tracking.

  • Helps with continuity, follow-up, and compliance in reporting or audits.

These perspectives support more effective planning and help you identify risks and opportunities earlier.

What type of relationships can be identified?

Stakeholder relationships

Stakeholder relationships show the network of connections you have within your stakeholder database. This could be simple information like understanding the position a stakeholder has within an organisation, or be something more complex like the nature of relationships between multiple stakeholders within a government department or community.

Go to Manage Stakeholders for more information.

Property relationships

Property relationships identify who is connected to the parcel of land you're tracking. The property relationships can vary, from Owners, Tenants, Managing agents, Lawyers etc.

Interaction relationships

Interaction relationships refer to the stakeholders who are involved in the communication or engagement activity. This could be the individual, organisation or property record.

Go to Interactions for more information.

How can I view relationships?

You can view relationships in stakeholder records and in interaction records under the Relationships tab.

Go to Manage Stakeholders for more information about how to access and edit relationships.

Stakeholder network map

The Network Map lets you visualise the connections that a stakeholder has. It's only available in the stakeholder record under the Relationships tab.

Go to Network Maps for more information.

The example below shows the stakeholder record of Helen Williams. Helen has multiple relationships that are shown graphically.

Red shows the relationships of her primary organisation, Writings Bookshop:

  • She is the owner of Writings Bookshop.

  • Paolo Travestori reports directly to her as Writings' retail manager.

Blue shows external organisations:

  • Oddment Press and Ventura Press provide stock for her bookshop.

  • She founded and runs the National Readers' Conference, a non-profit organisation.

Brown shows external stakeholders:

  • Marybelle is a self-publishing author who provides books for Writers Bookshop and uses space in the bookshop to run workshops.

Stakeholders list view

On the Relationships tab, you can also view a stakeholder's connections as a list. This view is available in both stakeholder and interaction records.

Stakeholder list view in a stakeholder record

From this view you can see additional information such as the stakeholder's position (job title) within an organisation and who they report to or manage, their division, and their defined relationship with other stakeholders.

In this example of Helen Williams, you can see the additional information.

Stakeholder list view in an interaction record

The Relationships tab in an interaction record shows a list of the stakeholders connected to that interaction. For example, a meeting interaction would list the people who attended the meeting, the organisations they represented, and any properties that may relate to the meeting.

Properties list view

If the stakeholder is linked to any properties, the address(es) will be in the property list view. This view is available in both a stakeholder record and an interaction record.

In the stakeholder record, you'll also be able to see if there are any other stakeholders linked to the property.

Geographic map view

Linked properties can also be viewed on the responsive geographic map.
